Ski mountaineering has become an essential activity for snow sports enthusiasts. It’s a good alternative for enjoying winter skiing, nature and landscapes. If you’re not yet familiar with ski touring, we encourage you to try it on the circuits available in Grandvalira.   The Mountain Pass To go ski mountaineering in Andorra you need a different ski pass from the Alpine ski pass. This is the Mountain Pass, which allows you to use the specific circuits for this discipline in Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal, Ordino Arcalís and Naturland. Like the traditional ski pass, you can buy it for a single day or for the whole season. In this case, the Mountain Pass is common to all resorts and is also valid for the snowshoe circuits. It also includes the use of some lifts in each ski resort for one ascent and one descent per day. Ski mountaineering circuits There are a total of 27 specific circuits for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing in all the resorts. Grandvalira has 9 areas. Near the hotel, in the El Tarter sector, you will find a circuit where you can practise this modality. The opening hours are the same as the slopes, but there are some circuits where you can go ski mountaineering at night (from 5.30 pm to 10 pm) or early in the morning before the slopes open (from 7 am to 9 am). Benefits of ski mountaineering As we said at the beginning, ski mountaineering is a sport that is gaining more and more followers every day. Although it is more demanding than alpine skiing and you have to have a certain level of skiing, you can also get started and enjoy snow sports in a different way. It is a very complete physical activity ideal for keeping fit during the winter. The fact of practising it in the open air surrounded by incredible landscapes will increase your sense of wellbeing and you will be put to the test with some climbs that are harder than others. Did you know that there are 20 museums in Andorra? After the Vatican, it is the country with the most museums per square metre. One of them is the Carmen Thyssen Museum, where you can admire pieces of art from her private collection and which offers a different temporary exhibition every year. Until the 8th of January 2023 you can discover Made in Paris: the generation of Matisse, Lagar and Foujita, which exhibits the works of international artists who imbibed the Paris of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.   An afternoon at the museum The Carmen Thyssen Museum is divided into different blocks representing the most representative schools of the period from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, with the peculiarity that they follow the lines of the Parisian metro. You can admire works by the artists who give their name to the exhibition and others such as Thomas Hart Benton, Francisco Bores, Hermen Anglada Camarasa and Baltasar Lobo, who were inspired by the artistic currents of the French capital to create their works of art. In addition, music will accompany the exhibition with performances by French pianists from the mid-20th century. On this occasion, your visit to the Thyssen Museum will make you feel like you are in the Paris of the Belle Époque. The Carmen Thyssen Andorra Museum It is located in Escaldes-Engrodany, next to the parish church, on the ground floor of an emblematic building: the Valira guesthouse. It was one of the oldest hotels in Andorra, founded in the 1930s by the monks of Montserrat, who promoted the benefits of the town’s thermal waters. The building is protected as a representative example of granite architecture. It currently houses dwellings and cannot be visited, with the exception of the Carmen Thyssen Museum. The long weekend in August is approaching and if you still don’t know what to do, here are a few ideas to make the most of it. Combine two activities that go hand in hand in Andorra: mountains and shopping. Read on and discover three routes to do with the family and suggestions for shopping in Andorra. Mountain hikes near the hotel The Tarter hotel is very well located for hiking and enjoying places of great beauty. We suggest an excursion for each day of the long weekend of 15 August. – Incles Valley Very close, between El Tarter and Canillo, you have to visit the Vall d’Incles. It is the starting point for many mountain routes, which can take you to the Cabana Sorda lake, the Siscaró lakes or the Juclà lakes. In order to preserve the valley, in summer, road access is not allowed. If you don’t want to go on foot, you will have to take a little train available from 10 am to 6 pm (you can buy a ticket at the information booth in the valley). – Primer de Pessons Lake Another excursion you will love is the one to the Pessons lakes. It starts at the Cubil car park in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira. Reaching the first lake is relatively easy and the climb takes an hour through a forest that will allow you to observe the local flora and fauna. – Cóms de Jan cottage in Ransol One last excursion that we recommend you do on foot is to the Cabana de Cóms de Jan hut at an altitude of 2215 metres. To start it, you will have to go by car to Coma de Ransol and from there follow the indications of the route, which is accessible and of medium level. It will take you about 1 hour to get there, and next to the refuge you will find a fountain to refresh yourself after the walk. And remember, before hiking in the mountains, you should check the weather conditions and equip yourself properly. Shopping in Andorra Summer sales are on! Sales start at the end of June and last until 5 September.  You’ll find shops selling almost all products: clothing, perfumery and cosmetics, electronics, computers, car and motorbike accessories… everything you need, and at a much lower price because the equivalent of English VAT (IGI in Andorra) is much lower here (only 4.5%). In addition, for the long weekend of 15 August, the fashion shops are already starting to receive items for the new season, so you can discover the new trends at the best price. Visit the main shopping areas of the capital and Escaldes-Engordany, the large supermarkets, shopping centres and outlets, or change of scenery and go up to Pas de la Casa for a day. In summer, most shops are usually open until 9 p.m., and between shops you can stop for a drink in a bar or café. This summer you’ll be surprised by a new activity in Andorra: the Tibetan bridge in Canillo. Located in the heart of nature, it is just a short distance from the Roc del Quer, one of the most visited places in the Principality. The new summer attraction: the Tibetan bridge of Canillo The Tibetan Bridge of Canillo crosses over the Vall del Riu, located in the middle of nature, flying over it for 158 metres. It is at an altitude of 1875 metres on the Armiana side and 1884 metres on the Coll de Cauba. At 603 metres long, it is the second longest Tibetan bridge in the world with the same characteristics. The footbridge, which is minimalist, is 1 metre wide, weighs 200 tonnes and the passage is one-way. It can accommodate 60 people simultaneously. It was inaugurated on Tuesday 7 June and this first season will be open until 30 November, from 10am to 7pm. Next year, a platform for extreme sports, such as bungee jumping, is planned. How to get to the Tibetan Bridge of the Vall del Riu The Tibetan bridge is in Canillo, about 10 minutes by car from the hotel on the road to Montaup. Access to the bridge is payable and can be bought in a pack with the Roc del Quer, which is very close to the footbridge. The ticket also includes public transport from the centre of Canillo or from Roc del Quer’s parking. Also note that if you want to take advantage of the Roc del Quer viewpoint, from this year onwards it will also be paying (at least in the summer and autumn months). The price of the pack with the Tibetan bridge, the Roc del Quer and the bus is 14€. To access it is necessary to book and buy the ticket in advance through their website: www.ponttibetacanillo.com. We suggest an itinerary around some of Andorra’s viewpoints to get to know the country through its most beautiful landscapes. You can visit them in summer, but also the rest of the year to see the contrasting colours of the mountains and enjoy the views! The Roc del Quer Let’s start with the most famous viewpoint in Andorra and the most popular on Instagram. It is located in Canillo, in the same parish where the hotel del Tarter is located and is easily accessible by car or bike (if you are a cycling enthusiast, we strongly recommend this route). The last stretch on foot is easy and at the end you will find a 20-metre footbridge, 12 metres of which fly over the mountain. The final climax is a sculpture of a thinker who seems to be floating in the air. The path of Les Pardines This unpaved track goes from Els Cortals d’Encamp to the lake of Engolasters. It is very easy to do with the whole family and has a distance of 3 km. from where you can enjoy the views over the parish of Encamp. The path runs through a botanical garden integrated into the vegetation, waterfalls and several observation points from where you can take beautiful photos. The new Mirador Solar viewpoint We continue to the Ordino-Arcalís ski resort to go up to the newest viewpoint in Andorra. Opened last summer, you can reach it on foot or by cable car and chairlift (although in both cases, the last stretch must be done on foot). This viewpoint is located at an altitude of 2,700 metres above the Peyreguils peak. It is a sundial with a 25-metre-diameter round sphere in suspension, from where you can admire the peaks of the Tristaina cirque and see the geographical border between Andorra and France. The viewpoint of the Les Fonts circuit This route is in Engolasters, in the parish of Escaldes. It is an easily accessible path through the forest. Along the way you can enjoy the local flora and fauna and it is also suitable for the whole family. The viewpoint is halfway along the path, from where you will have a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters. The route is also the starting point for high mountain excursions and there is also a climbing point. These are just some of Andorra’s viewpoints, but there are many more. You just have to come and discover them.

Did you know that Andorra is home to an area listed as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO? It is the parish of Ordino, the northernmost valley of Andorra. Declaration of Biosphere Reserve Ordino has recently been declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2020, thanks to the fact that it has managed to maintain a balance between society and nature. These territories aim to improve people’s relationship with the environment through the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, known as SDGs. It is an international recognition, specifically the parish of Ordino, which belongs to the European network of Biosphere Reserves within the mountain theme. Visiting Ordino in summer The parish of Ordino is made up of a total of 8 villages at an altitude of 1,300 metres, covers an area of 85 km2 and is famous for outdoor sports. In winter the snow allows you to enjoy the ski slopes of Ordino-Arcalís and in summer you can go on excursions and routes through the mountains so as not to miss the scenery. The core of the reserve is the Sorteny nature reserve, a territory that is home to 800 species of flora, including a refuge of rare and endangered flora. The protected valley coexists perfectly with the rest of Ordino’s cultural offer. Among its museums, for example, are two of the oldest houses in the country converted into house-museums: Areny Plandolit and Cal Pal. To these we must add the trails that you can follow to discover the historical heritage of the parish, such as the iron trail or the water trail. So if you are one of those who enjoy combining nature with culture: you will love Odino! You will certainly need more than one day to discover all its hidden corners. Andorra is a candidate for biosphere reserve status On the other hand, Andorra has presented its candidacy to become the first whole country to be recognised as a biosphere reserve. The core would be the 3 legally protected natural territories: the Sorteny natural park, the Comapedrosa natural park and the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley. The latter is the only one in the whole of the Pyrenees to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The candidacy will be decided in April 2023. MŪV by Cirque du Soleil: exclusive for Andorra After 7 editions, Cirque du Soleil has come up with a totally new creation with the unmistakable stamp of the Canadian company. On stage we will see acrobats and musical numbers, with spectacular scenery, costumes and lighting. In this Cirque du Soleil show, as in the last two, music will also be a key part of the show, indeed the lyrics of the songs are the narrative plot.
